Personal Data in the Education Sector

On Friday September 23, MyData Cameroon Community met in a webinar to discuss personal data management in education sector in Cameroon.

In Cameroon, as in many countries around the world, the education sector is increasingly interested in the potential of technology and the many benefits it can bring. Computerized management tools exist to manage enrolments, timetables, report cards, etc. While this greatly facilitates management, it also makes it difficult for teachers to keep up with the pace of change. Computerized management systems are sometimes installed at the decision of the administrator, without consulting the educational community or informing the parents’ council. This can lead to inappropriate access to personal data and a lack of trust in the data processed. Covid19 pandemic has increased the use of digital tools and the collection of personal data on pupils and students through digital means.

For MyData Cameroon community, educators and technology developers must be aware of the ethics and implications of collecting, storing, and using student data. These issues include the potential implications for student privacy, the need for transparent data collection and use policies, and the importance of designing informed consent.
